- The transfer case is what engages and controls the 4×4 and AWD systems. Rear wheel drive vehicles do not have a transfer case.
- The main components of a transfer case include encoder motor, input shaft, output shaft, chain, gear shaft, input gear, speedometer gear, front wheel gear, case and bearings. Transfer cases are also very complex and the first step to properly repairing them is properly diagnosing the problem.

In several instances, including a 2003 F250, it was just the encoder motor on the outside of the transfer case. This is a much cheaper repair and doesn’t require removing the transfer case.
